PLATFORM GLITCH AESTHETICS

The Platform "Glitch Aesthetics" is an international exhibition and discussion forum for artists and business IT specialists - comparable in its basic structure to a visual-hybrid symposium - lasting six months - with a growing number of discussion guests who are critically enthusiastic about deal with the phenomenon of glitch aesthetics. "Glitch" is an unexpected event/or result, malfunction of digital or analog artifacts. Perfection and the intentional production of errors merge in media art. While intended manipulations in art condense into a postmodern aesthetic of the Digital Age, business informatics is developing an increasingly critical attitude towards unexpected malfunctions in AI.

The "Glitch Aesthetics" platform is dedicated to the key themes of Action, Latency, System Criticism and Postfuturistic Archaeology. Artists and business IT specialists enter into a dialogue with representatives of various activist networks such as DARA, GALA, AiArtists.org, ARTIS and the Glitch Art Scene that has formed worldwide. The aim is to create a forum for the "uncomfortable" phenomena of independence in AI. Four international artists have been appointed as keynote artists: Nadja Verena Marcin, Berlin/New York; Isaac Sullivan, Dubai; Rosa Menkman, Arnhem, Netherlands and Katrin Leitner, Kassel.

POSTFUTURISTIC ARCHAEOLOGY

Katrin Leitner formulates fundamental questions about the present, past and future, existence, space and time. Her artistic research investigates patterns of transmission of knowledge and experience within human communities in the past, present and future. Art and Archeology merge in an almost archetypal pictorial language of Postfuturism. Art as an existential part of life, the creation of culturally interactive information carriers for future generations, as well as an intuitive, highly sensitive and sensual approach to the artistic material are the foundation of her artistic productions. In her latest project she deals with digital dependencies and algorithm addiction.

In work cycles and long-term projects spanning several years, Katrin Leitner combines material and immaterial media such as ceramics, video projection, text in words and images. The results of her multi-material, interdisciplinary working methods are condensed into variable, space-related installations and performative stagings. Thought to be modular and situational, she repeatedly draws the viewer into situations filled with artistic artefacts in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the complex structures and connections of human existence.

AKTION : Rosa Menkman is a Dutch art theorist, curator, and visual artist specializing in glitch art and dissolution theory. She explores video compression, feedback and glitches to create digital artworks. In 2011 she published Network Notebook #04: The Glitch Moment(um). This book uses information theory to propose an understanding of "glitch art" as a specific genre of contemporary art. The manifesto "Glitch Studies Manifesto" was awarded "Best Practice" by the Virtueel Platform, the then industry institute for e-culture in the Netherlands.

In his artistic productions, Isaac Sullivan (Dubai) deals with analogue disruptive factors. His research interests include artificial intelligence, sound art and the problems of space and place. In exhibitions and performances, he explores spatial and temporal forms of latency (in the sense of a delay time) - through video, installation and acoustic interventions. In 2019 he took part in the Biennale Arte Venice | Collateral Events of the European Cultural Center. In 2018 he was represented at the Tashkent Biennale and the Beirut Design Week. Sullivan is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Zayed University. In the Magazin SO-FAR he reports on his artistic research on the phenomenon of the "non-digital glitch", which is part of his long-term project Hypothetical Spaces.

SYSTHEM CRITICS: Nadja Verena Marcin's latest project #SOPHYGRAY is a feminist audio bot that visitors can talk to in an immersive installation. #SOPHYGRAY refutes gender-specific notions of virtual assistants like Alexa or Siri. Their philosophical, often humorous answers lead to unusual, surprising conversations. To extend her language-based machine learning skills and bring conversations with Sophy into the private realm of the non-visitor outside of the white cube, Nadja Verena Marcin has developed an APP as part of the EMAP/EMARE residency at Onassis Stegi.

Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Norbert Gronau (Potsdam) formulates in his blog post: "AI is changing the world of work - how do we react to it?" [KI verändert die Arbeitswelt – wie reagieren wir darauf?] "People have been used to technology behaving reliably and, in particular, predictably for 200 years. They attach this reliability to always the same observable processes. This is [currently] changing and technology does not explain the changed process! The discomfiture that results from this has to be "captured" in an appropriate manner so as not to create problems of alienation." (Prof. Nobert Gronau). A central question of the discourse platform is therefore dedicated to the question "What is a glitch (value)?".

Project initiators are the GFZK e.V. in cooperation with the Digitalvilla (Lehrstuhl für Wirtschaftsinformatik inb. Prozesse und Systeme) and the Weizenbaum Institute for the Digital Society.
